If you are looking to hand enter a Traverse from a field book of hand-written angles and distances in Carlson Survey you
can use the Cogo pulldown following the steps below.

In the attachment section at the bottom of this article there is a sample DWG, CRD and RW5 with a few measurements
stored along with a Link to the "Process Raw File" tutorial for details on Compass Rule adjustments.
Open up Carlson Survey and start a New Empty Drawing.
1) Click Points / Set Coordinate File / Open a New CRD file and give it a name
2) Points / Draw Locate Points / Enter and Assign = type in coordinates for at least 1 point if you are using a 1 point
setup with an Azimuth or enter in Coordinates for 2 points if you are setting up and backsighting between 2 known
points
3) Click Points / Points Defaults:
a. If your concerned with elevations you can check the box for "Locate on Real Z Axis" then check the box for
"Instrument and Rod Height" in the upper left
b. You can set the Vertical Angle mode in the bottom right to match the way your survey was collected
c. You can Uncheck the box for Descriptions if you do not want to be prompted to enter a description for each
measurement
4) Click Cogo / "Raw File on/off" / click New / Select a name for the new Raw File / click Save
5) If you want to see linework connecting your Traverse Points click Cogo / "Line On_Off"
6) click Cogo / Occupy Point = enter the Point number you want to Occupy
7) now it prompts you to "Set Backsight Method" = if you are using a 2nd known point then hit Enter and type in the
Backsight point number. IF you are using an Azimuth type "A" (without quotes) and hit enter then type in your
Backsight Azimuth
8) Now click Cogo / Traverse if you want to move your setup or click Cogo / Sideshot if you want to collect Sideshots
9) Type in "O" / hit Enter = if you are always going to use "Angle Right" then type in "R" and hit Enter so it always
defaults to Angle Right
10) At this point you simply enter in your Horizontal Angle / hit enter / enter in the Distance / hit Enter / enter in
Zenith Angle / Instr. Height / Rod Height and Point Description. If you are using the same Instr. Height and Rod Height
as the point before just hit Enter to use the height in Brackets.
11) It returns you to an Angle prompt and now you can type in another Angle / Angle / Distance to Traverse again or
type in "S" and enter to start collecting sideshots.
12) Repeat this for each measurement in your notes and when you want to switch between Sideshot and Traverse type in
"S" / enter for SS and "T" / enter for Traverse
13) When your done entering in your data type in "X" / hit enter
14) Click Cogo / Raw File On_Off / click Close File to Finish the Raw File we created
15) Now click the Survey Pulldown / Edit_Process_Raw / click the Existing tab / browse to the RW5 raw file we created
in Step # 4 / click Open = you can see all your Raw Data in the raw editor. If you want to perform Compass Rule
Adjustments you can do it at this time using the information at the link below.
