Title: Windows Vista, 7, 8, and 10 with Windows Mobile Device Center

To connect a data collector to a computer which is running a newer version of Windows than XP, you cannot use Microsoft ActiveSync.  You have to download Windows Mobile Device Center from the link at the bottom of this article.

To find out whether your version of Window is 32bit or 64bit, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. The version is listed after System Type.

In Windows 10, type System in the Search field, by the Windows start button on the bottom, left-hand side of the monitor. Click on System information. Then, look for System Type.

Plug in your Data Collector then click the link below to download the Mobile Device Center software and install it.

When using Windows Mobile Device Center you need to make sure that you are using the proper cables to connect with your PC.  Meaning the cables, or cradle, that came with your collector. 

Working with A USB to 9 Pin Serial Adapter

In order to connect your Carlson Explorer to your desktop computer, the Carlson Explorer requires PCLink to be running while Windows Mobile Device Center searches for the mobile device.

First, note which port you are connected through on the PC (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.).  Then, on the desktop of your data collector find and double tap the PC LINK icon.  This will open a window with a message telling you that it is connecting to the PC.  You may need to tap the PC LINK icon on your collector a few times until a small computer appears and stays on the taskbar of the data collector.  The Windows Mobile Device Center will also notify you of a connection.
