This is a short tutorial for creating and using an Aerial photo or image Topo map inside SurvCE 2.50 and higher  

1) Click the link below to download and install XPortSetup.exe to your Desktop or Laptop computer:

2) Make a new folder in My Documents called Image Test. Then, click the link at the Bottom of this page and save the file Sample Images.zip into the new folder Image Test.

3) Unzip the file we downloaded in Step #2. The file Sample Images.zip contains an Image and World File:
            USGS100K.tif
            USGS100K.TFW

4) Run Carlson X-port then click Tools / Image X-port to open up the Image Set Manager utility.

5) Click the Open New / Existing Image Database button and navigate to the Image Test folder, which we created in Step #2 inside your My Documents folder.

6)  Once you're in the Image Test folder, type in a file name at the bottom of USGS100. Then, click the OPEN button.

7) Click File then click Open Image File and you should see the file USGS100K.tif displayed in the My DocumentsImage Test folder.  

Left-Click the USGS100K.tif file to highlight it then click OPEN.  You’ll see a topo map image displayed on-screen.  The world file should be set automatically for you in our sample project.  

***Please Note:  If you need to view or change the World File, you can click the Tools pull-down. Then, click World File Editor which will display your current values and allow you to click Import World Files if necessary.

8) Click the Image Set pulldown then click Add Image to Set.  

Click next to SurvCE Format then click the Process Image button.  After a few seconds the Blue Bar will scroll across and it will say Complete and then return you to the Image Set Manager window.

9) Now that the image is processed you can click File then click Exit to exit out of the Image Set Manager window

10) Now open up the folder My DocumentsImage Test.  You should have 72 Bitmap image files and a file named USGS100.idb

  a.  Make a subfolder in your removable Flash Memory Storage Card called Image Sample {It won't work without copying all the bitmap Image files and the *.IDB file into a Subfolder on the Compact Flash Card}

  b.  Copy all of the files into the subfolder on the Storage Card {It is not necessary to use the original TIF or JPEG or TFW, just the new images we created in Step #7 and the new *.IDB database file}

  c.  Plug the Storage Card into the Data Collector

11) Open SurvCE 2.0 or higher and start a new job / tap the Map Icon in the Upper right / tap Tools / Place World Image

12) Check the box for Use Image Database / check the box for Save Image Boundary Points

13) Tap Select Image Database / find the file we copied to the Storage Card in the Subfolder Image Sample which should show as USGS100.idb / tap it to highlight it / tap OK / tap OK again

14) Now tap the Zoom Extents icon in the upper left and you should see the Image onscreen

15) If you need to turn off the image you can go back into the Map Screen / Tools / Place World Image = uncheck the box for Use Image Database

16) The Chicago Shore links below contains 1' aerial photography in the Chicago area. This image set contains the SurvCE images and image database (IDB). Download these files to your hard-disk and unzip the contents. Copy these files to your data card on your data collector. Follow steps 11 and 12 above and select Chicago.imd. This image set is in State Plane Illinois East NAD83 feet. 

The attached document Image Expor1.doc gives additional information for Image Link and Image Export.
